Japan Coin die - 1 Yen 1894 (Meiji 27)
日本-明治27年１円の鋳型
At the end of January 2004, a Japanese 1 yen die was found. I originally thought that the die is a fake, and hence bought it just as an example of how a die looked like.
2004年1月下旬に、日本の1円硬貨の鋳型を見つけました。この鋳型は偽物だと思っていたのですが、どういうものか知りたかったので買ってみました。
The dimension of the die is as approximately: (measured by a standard ruler)

The die was originally rusty, and there are cracks in the die already. I had to clean the rust, or the rust would deteriorate the conditions and the details of die even worse.
もともとこの鋳型はさびていて、ひびが入っている部分もあります。さびていることによって、鋳型全体の状態がもっと悪くなると思ったので、さびを取ってみました。
However, at very close magnification, the details of the die looked very similar to an original coin which is minted in the same year.
しかし、鋳型を拡大してみたところ、同じ年に作られた本物のコインととてもよく似ていると思われます。
Also, a genuine coin fitted the die exactly! The size of the coin and the die must be the same!
しかも、本物のコインとぴったり一致します。コインと鋳型のサイズがまったく同じとしか考えられません。
